Founder and CEO Katonya Breaux leapt into this business without any previous plans to do so. She was tired of only having three options when it came to tinted, no-residue sunscreen: toxic chemical sunscreens, thick white sunscreens that left a hideous ghostly residue behind or a tinted mineral sunscreen that left her skin gray or lavender in color. She found a chemist and asked if he would make a clean, mineral sunscreen that respected her skin tone. The result? The product was better than she could have imagined.

“I knew that I needed something that the industry did not have available for me, and I decided to make it for myself,” Breaux told BLK OCEANS. “It was then that I decided, if I needed it, then others who looked like me needed it to.”

In 2016, Unsun Cosmetics was born. Today, it is one of the few brands on the market selling SPF for various shades of brown skin tones while also providing clean, no-residue ingredients that are kind to the person using it as well as the environment it's being used in. The collection also includes SPF body lotion and emollient-rich hand cream that’s easily absorbed and nourishing to your skin.

“Our Mineral Tinted Face Sunscreen (in medium/dark and light/medium) is our hands down best seller. It was recognized by Allure Beauty and won the Best of Beauty Award in 2019. I have been especially proud of this product because it is the driving force behind my brand. Not to mention I wear it every single day!” says Breaux.
