Tacharra Perry started distressing shorts and creating her own designs in high school to pay for her senior year expenses. Following graduation, she taught herself to sew, started receiving custom orders and entered fashion school with a goal: to launch her brand, CHAR. After debuting her line at New York Fashion Week in 2016, Perry grew a following of influencers, and by 2018 her brand was in full swing. 

With very few Black women designers recognized in the industry, Perry dreams of breaking barriers and shining a spotlight on the need for representation in every aspect of the fashion world.

“I want Black women of all shades to be represented in my brand, and I am working on body inclusiveness as well,” Perry tells BLK OCEANS. “I ultimately just want to be a huge part of the shift that is going to happen in fashion.”

Inspired by many creatives including Helmut Lang, Perry relaunched her brand with an emphasis on experimentation.  Her recent line utilizes colors, textures and textiles that were new to the designer. The result? Eye-popping and immaculately designed silhouettes to bring out your inner rockstar goddess.

“Ultimately my inspiration comes from everywhere,” says Perry. “I'm a free spirit and I'm extremely adventurous and optimistic, so it's easy for me to be inspired by the smallest things. I also read and watch a lot of interviews just to keep me going.”

Stepping outside of her comfort zone has paid off. The Silver High-cut Cheeky Short emanates sexy, space-age fashion and is one of the most popular items within the current collection. But Perry warns the next release will bring fierce competition to the coveted Cheeky Shorts, and Black Friday 2020 will offer some exciting new options from the CHAR workroom.
