Jam+Rico
for family, culture and the love of design
After eight years of working in the fashion industry, Lisette Scott knew she wanted to start her own brand. At the time, her peers were aspiring to work for the next big designer in fashion, but she didn’t share those goals; she wanted to build something of her own.
With immigrant grandparents from Jamaica and Puerto Rico, Scott founded Jam+Rico to celebrate the beauty of the Caribbean. She draws inspiration for her bold, statement-making jewelry from the colors, music and traditions that ring from every corner of the islands.
“The most prominent inspirations were food and music in my home. A little salsa and reggae with a mix of arroz con pollo, pastelles, jerk and curry were favorites and loves within my home. Once I got older and was able to travel to both islands, the fascination and love of my heritage grew even stronger. The colors, carnivals, art, beaches and language all inspired me to create and design,” says Scott on her website.
Today, her collections are a dance of colors and shapes that embody a personality all their own. Scott’s best selling products are the small Hoja Earrings, inspired by a trip to Montego Bay, Jamaica, and the Cowrie Bangle, from the Aurora collection, inspired by the sun and traditional Caribbean classics like the cowrie shell.
Each year, Jam+Rico draws inspiration from a new island. This year, Scott is excited to share the beauty and culture of Puerto Rico through her designs.
“I’ve always been fascinated with my grandfather’s home in Puerto Rico and learning more about his traditions and culture,” Scott tells BLK OCEANS. “Through my work I’m excited to share my favorite things about the island, while also sharing the history of my family.”
