Jomo Furniture is transforming contemporary furniture inspired by African roots and modern designs. Jomo Tariku, Ethiopian American artist, designer and founder of Jomo Furniture, launched his namesake collection in 2017 after years as a design student. With an emphasis on African art and culture, Tariku depicts true craftsmanship with aesthetically pleasing and functional African furniture.
We recently connected with Tariku to discuss the transition from student to designer, what makes his brand so unique, and future design plans.
Tell us a bit about the history of Jomo’s furniture and the mission driving your success.
“The inception of my furniture line harkens back to a design thesis at University where I explored how to combine African motifs into furniture designed for the modern space. After several careers including running a small design firm and assisting a major international institution as a designer and data scientist, I refocused my effort on launching a modern African furniture line.
My passion and mission is to design visually striking and functional African furniture for the modern space.”
What makes Jomo’s Furniture different from others in the market?
“My work aims to cultivate consumers and connect them to a lifelong appreciation and deeper connection to the continent through elevated modern African design. Weaving the African continent’s nature, art and history into each piece I produce, I want to create heirloom pieces to be celebrated and enjoyed for generations.”
When discussing future plans for the company, Tariku shared that there will be some upcoming work commissioned by museums and another project that is hush-hush. Keep an eye out for new chair designs in 2023 so you can relish in modern luxury with an African twist.
