Demesha Wilson and her daughter Dru were always on the lookout for Black-owned nail polish brands for children. Instead of continuing the search, Wilson decided to create a brand of her own, with the help of her two-year-old Co-owner.
Purely Coated is a nail polish line that allows kids to have fun and express themselves, and their parents can feel comfort in knowing the ingredients are non-toxic. Best of all, 10 percent of monthly sales go to Prevent Child Abuse, America.
I connected with the mother/daughter duo to learn more about this truly colorful business.

On the inspiration for each color:
“Each color and name describes the way we should motivate our children. Something I am working on with my kids, is conscious and nurtured parenting (always a work in progress). Each name is a reminder to parents to embrace every imperfection of their child and allow them to be themselves.”
On their most popular colors:
“Our best-selling nail polish colors have been imperial, upbeat and sky. Imperial is a rich purple color, this reminds parents and kids that they are royalty and to never allow anyone to tell them differently. Upbeat is a vibrant pink and was made to remind children to always be as bright as their nails no matter what. Sky is a metallic blue and pushes to remind children that the sky is the limit and they can achieve all of their dreams.”

On plans for the future:
“Within the next few months, we plan to really customize our brand to be more personal. We are working to create a great experience that allows our customers to make the children they are buying for feel special as if this nail polish was made for each child specifically. With these surprise additions, we will be able to help parents save time when they are also shopping for a special occasion.”
