Quality Over Quantity

Black-Owned Brands Promoting ‘Slow Fashion’

When we are used to everything moving so quickly, it’s sometimes nice to slow things down. From fast food to fast fashion, we live in a world of excess, where quantity is often valued over quality. The slow fashion movement is a holistic and thoughtful approach to fashion that places more value on each product, each customer, and each experience. Slow fashion puts mindless consumption in check, forcing us to slow down and celebrate the creative process.

Here are a few Black-owed fashion brands who are living and breathing slow fashion with handmade, ethically sourced products designed to last.

Joanna Vanderpuije

Each piece in Joanna Vanderpuije’s collection is handmade and one of a kind. Her textiles evolve from her hand drawings, paintings, and mixed media. The label offers accessories and clothing reflecting the designer’s vivid signature of fresh playful screenprints with strong tailoring, unexpected embellishments, and innovative design.

Kamso Kids

Kamso Kids produces only a select few children’s styles rather than focusing on seasonal collections. They release new styles when they have developed something worthy and archive when demand has dwindled. This allows them to grow a beloved collection organically, through small batch production and reduces the likelihood of clothing waste.
