Go Green with these Black-owned Cannabis Brands

Written By Eliza Colón

This week we’re going green…and we’re not talking about the environment. We’re talking marijuana. The magic plant is known by many names (weed, ganja, kush and more scientifically, cannabis) and has been a staple to the culture for generations. Despite being legal in 37 states, the multibillion dollar industry still drastically under-represents Black entrepreneurs. Here are 6 Black-owned cannabis brands that are getting lit and tackling diversity for the future of weed.

Simply Pure

Founded by Wanda James and Scott Durrah, two military veterans, Simply Pure was created in 2010 as a safe space to learn about sustainable, healthy, and beneficial cannabis edibles. As the first Black-owned dispensary in Denver, CO, the company prides themselves on being socially and politically active. If you’re in the Denver area, or planning a trip, be sure to stop by Simply Pure and speak to one of their friendly, knowledgeable budologists.

Big Apple Rolling Papers

With the legalization of recreational cannabis in New York City in 2021, Big Apple Rolling Papers is showing us how real New Yorkers roll. Based in Queens, BARP strives to be authentic and active in the Black community by creating diversity in NYC’s new cannabis scene. Their classic stoner essentials come in a candy apple red so you can light up and rep the Big Apple wherever you go.

Inertia’s Root

Want the natural, healing properties of cannabis without the high? That’s where CBD steps in. Inertia’s Root, based out of Nashville, TN, creates holistic, THC-free, cannabis supplements for urban professionals. Stuart McClean, one of the company’s founders, wants to change the stigma behind using cannabis and promote an alternative to prescription drugs. We recommend the Arctic Sunburst Hemp Balm. The combination of nourishing oils and CBD will give sore muscles a treat, no prescription necessary.

Oakland Extracts

The founders of Oakland Extracts learned that raising capital and going against larger competitors as a Black-owned business is challenging. The company started to ensure their community had access to quality cannabis products at an affordable price. Oakland Extracts is doing everything they can to uplift others by supporting local farms and community organizations. Next time you’re in Cali, try their small-batch Cookie Crumble.
