We all know the saying, "It takes a village", but how do we ensure the village remains intact and thrives for generations down the line? Founder and Owner of The Rooted Baby Co., Alfreda Abena, hopes to provide an answer to this question by educating and preserving history through the littlest members of our village, our babies. Inspired by the birth of her son, Noah Kofi, Abena’s mission is to educate people about African history and culture, Ghana specifically, so they can learn the rich past that the motherland has to offer.
“The baby market is very mainstream presenting. There is often little to no representation of children of color, especially little Black children,” Abenda tells BLK OCEANS. “I aim to change the narrative. The Rooted Baby Co. not only presents Black babies in the forefront of the business but with them wearing traditional African prints. Our parents and children need to see themselves represented.”

Abena draws her design inspiration directly from Africa with Ankara print fabrics hailing from Ghana and the names of her products and colors honoring notable Ghanaian landmarks and places. Her loyal customers find both practicality and inspiration from her products that range from teething toys to Ashanti dolls.
“My best selling product right now is the Mealtime Collection and I can see why! The bibs and bowls are completely made from BPA-free silicone that provides easy cleaning for mom and dad,” says Abena. The popular bowls suction to surfaces and come with an air tight, leak proof lid, perfect for road trip snacks, homeschool supplies, paint storage, and more.

In the coming months, The Rooted Baby Co. will be debuting new Ankara prints, more colors, and a variety of products as they expand into additional baby and children's items that are multi-functional for easy and modern parenting.
